From Sheep Stations to Shooting Stages: Jocko’s Journey into Precision Rifle Sports

A Brief Background

Jocko grew up on his family’s property in Narrikup, located in south-west Western Australia. In 1992, at just 19 years old, he made the move east to jackaroo on a merino stud on the Hay Plains in south-western New South Wales.

More than three decades later, Jocko remains in Hay, now managing a 116,000-hectare sheep production operation for one of Australia’s largest pastoral companies.

A Lifelong Shooter

Jocko’s introduction to shooting came at a young age, starting with rabbits and an air rifle on the family farm. He soon moved on to a .22 and by 16 was shooting a .222.

His shooting journey was primarily shaped by necessity — pest control and hunting across the large rural properties where he worked — using a range of rifles from .22s up to a .300 Win Mag.

While competitive shooting had always interested him, it wasn’t until a close friend, Ben Jarratt, suggested giving precision rifle shooting a try that Jocko considered it a real possibility.

Entering the PRS World

Jocko shot his first PRS match in 2019 at Mildura, bringing along an un-braked .243, a single barricade bag, and carrying his spare magazine in his back pocket. That same year he competed at Monarto and Little River, qualifying for the finale and finishing in the top 20 — a strong debut.

His competitive momentum was interrupted in 2020–2021 by COVID restrictions and shoulder surgery, limiting him to just one match at Mildura in 2022. He returned to more regular competition in 2023, attending three matches.

Gear Troubles and Growth

2023 proved challenging for Jocko due to equipment issues, particularly with his initial rifle setup. In early 2024, he diagnosed a significant barrel problem and made the switch to a new rifle — an APRS build featuring a Defiance action, Bartlein barrel, and Cadex Defence chassis chambered in 6×47 Lapua.

With this new setup and a ZeroTech optic onboard, Jocko’s confidence began to return. He also invested in formal training, completing a Tier One course during the off-season, which further sharpened his skills.

Joining Team ZeroTech & Topping the Amateur Leaderboard

In 2024, Jocko officially joined Team ZeroTech, initially running the Trace Advanced 5-30x56ED riflescope with the RMG2 reticle. In 2025, he transitioned to the new RMG3 and has quickly found its 0.2 Mil subtensions to be a major advantage for refined wind holds and precise shot placement.

His efforts culminated in a standout performance at the PRS Hill Top match in New South Wales, where he was awarded Top Amateur — a well-earned recognition of his continued growth and commitment to the sport.

Together, Jocko and Alix represent not only the ZeroTech brand but also the values of dedication, authenticity, and continual improvement that define the broader shooting sports community.
